What is Carbon Monoxide?
Carbon Monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that is dangerous for humans and your pet counterparts. It is harmful due to the fact Carbon monoxide displaces oxygen in the blood which then, in turn, deprives vital organs such as the heart, lungs, and brain, of oxygen. Since its odorless, when presented in large quantities individuals can pass out and even suffocate due to lack of oxygen which can result in death. This is why it is so important to ensure you have properly working CO detectors in your home or business.
Where CO comes from
Carbon Monoxide (CO) can be generated from a fuel source not being burned completely. Some usual suspects include propane, gasoline, coal, or heating oil. Even smoldering wood produces carbon monoxide. These types of fuel sources (propane, heating oil, gasoline, etc) can come from water heaters, clothes dryers, ovens, fireplaces or a car left running in a closed garage.
What Happens if your Carbon Monoxide Alarm goes off?
If your carbon monoxide alarm goes off, there are a few things you can do. First, if you hear the alarm go off, gather those in your home, open the windows of your home and leave the premises. It is common for carbon monoxide to produce flu-like symptoms so be sure to check for that when you step outside.
Don’t go back into the home unless it has been cleared by fire officials or the alarm has stopped with the windows open. When you re-enter, you want to turn of major appliances that produce CO and call technicians to review the appliances.
