Keeping one’s company safe is a top priority for business owners. Unfortunately, crimes happen when they are least expected, and usually, preventative measures could have been implemented to avoid these losses. Luckily, there are a few simple measures you can take that will help make burglary prevention a habit. Here are a few things to do to protect your business from intruders.
Lighting
Would-be burglars choose their targets based on how easy it is to get away with the crime. In an unlit area, there are no prying eyes to see what crimes are being committed. By keeping your building well-lit, burglars won’t have the cover of shadow to protect them. Pay particular attention to entrances and exits, especially to the rear of the building and on the roof. =
Locks
You should secure any doors that act as entrances/ exits to your business with heavy-duty locks. This includes doors, windows, skylights, attics, and any other point of entry, no matter how obscure. While it’s true that no lock is entirely intruder-proof, the more difficult the lock is to break or crack, the better. If the task proves to be too difficult, the burglar is likely to give up and find an easier target.
Doors
Even if you keep all doors well-locked, you still need to ensure that the doors themselves are in good working order. Doors that are loose or structurally weak are going to be prime spots for a burglar to get through. If your doors need replacing, choose solid doors made of durable materials. You may also want to consider crossbars on the backs of the doors to prevent them from being broken down.
Safes
As mentioned above, burglars choose easy targets, especially when there is more to gain if they are able to break in. During business hours, there should only be a small amount of cash in the tills. If you don’t have time to make a cash deposit that day to the company bank account, keep it and other valuables in a locked safe that is bolted to the ground. Burglars can, and will, remove entire safes to give them more time to crack them open later.
Displays
Burglars want to complete their mission as quickly as possible. To make it harder on them, keep your most valuable products on display towards the center of the store, away from points of entry. This makes the burglar have to spend a longer time in the location, running the risk of being caught the longer he is there.
Alarm Systems
One of the easiest preventative measures you can take as a business owner is to install a professional-grade alarm system. The benefits of an alarm system are twofold. Firstly, you will be alerted immediately if something is happening at your business, and the police will be informed. The quicker law enforcement can get there, the higher the chance of catching the intruder. Secondly, having an alarm system and plenty of warning signs visible is a deterrent to would-be thieves. Criminals are less likely to try robbing your business if they know there is an alarm.
