If your home or business has ever experienced a break-in, the initial shock is always present. After deeming the area safe, there are a few steps you should take to ensure reporting from a police and insurance standpoint will go properly. Continue reading to learn about the steps one should take following a break in.
Call the Police
Upon opening the door to your home or business and it appears to have been broken into, retreat to a safe area and call the police. There is a chance the criminal may still be in the building which may create a violent situation. Even if you are confident in your ability to defend yourself, there is still a potential for a criminal to have a weapon or be prone to have violence. After the police arrive and deem the area safe, you will then most likely walk through the building with the police.
Recording the Event
The police will begin asking some questions. Be sure to include the most accurate information and naturally, provide the police access to any existing security footage. The police will walk with you through the property and assess damage and note any missing items. Whether the break-in is residential or commercial, some of the same questions will be asked by the police. Questions like “Who was the last person to leave/Lockup??” or “Can you think of any people who would want to do this?” If you can answer, do so as it can help with the investigation.
Reach out to your insurance company
Fill in your insurance company on the items stolen and damaged goods. If you are in a commercial setting, you will most likely need to reach out to corporate partners to inform them of the break-in. Your insurance company will then work with you and the police.
