Did you know almost 10% of break-ins occur through garages and their side doors? Depending on your home’s layout, the chance of a break in occurring through your garage door may be more likely than neighbors. We wanted to write a blog on some tips regarding how to protect your home by increasing the security of your garage!
Have an alarm installed
This can sometimes an oversight when installing a system yourself. Be sure if you have an alarm system in place that the garage door and side doors are incorporated into the system. This is something Secure Lock and Alarm has seen with clients who had done self-installation then call us after a break in. Our team is trained on seeing all vulnerabilities within a home or business regarding their security and addressing them accordingly. We always elect to have an audible alarm vs a silent one. While they both notify the authorities, an audible alarm will scare off the criminal more times than not.
Frosted Windows
Frosting one’s windows that look into the garage prevents people from seeing any valuables in your garage. For some criminals, the risk of breaking in to find nothing won’t be worth the risk. Garages are home to a number of valuable items. Aside from your vehicle, If you own tools you know they don’t come cheap. It is a market in high demand for thieves who will generally re-sell them at a major discount. If a burglar gets in without being noticed and takes some tools, it may be weeks before noticing if you don’t regularly use them.
Upgrading your garage door
If your garage door has seen better days, it may be time to replace the garage door. Garage doors are exposed to the harsh weather New England has to offer which may lead to them breaking down. Even if a security system is properly installed, if the garage door is failing or deteriorating, burglars may be able to find their way in without detection. Garage doors have significantly improved over the last 20 years and are now made of more durable material as opposed to just pressure treated wood. A new garage door with the material now available should last a lifetime. This is an investment worth making if you’re serious about your security.
